We currently have a composting machine and some bins in which we keep raw materials to be fed into our machine and the outputs of the machine.
We could try to do more with composting and possibly get more people interested.
Possibly relevant is that the Edinburgh council has a
program of grants up to £2500 for doing waste-related things. We can apply at any time for amounts up to £200 and the next deadline for larger grants is in February 2009. If we wanted to apply for one of these grants, these are the things we could use the money on:
-
Posters and leaflets.
-
Kits for residents to accumulate compost in their flats in between taking it down to the backgreen. Compost buckets may not be enough because they don't deal with the problem where the waste starts to rot and smell. And people are probably too lazy to take their compost bucket to the backgreen every day. See this URL for how another place handles it:

-
Better storage bins in the backgreen for the compost raw materials. In particular, what do we do about food waste, especially meat?
-
Better storage bins in the backgreen for the output of the composting machine.
-
Maybe a wood chipper to help in getting a better mix of inputs to the composting machine. We can also collect cardboard (or maybe filch it from the blue-topped on-street recycling bins).
-
various other stuff (FEEL FREE TO EXTEND THIS LIST!)
We should also get a visit from a representative of the company that makes
our composting machine. They say they will give free on-site presentations. It would be good to be sure we are using it in a way that does not lead to unsafe microbial growths in the output.
